They are not alone in this belief:  In 2003, a Gallup poll found that 90% of Americans surveyed were in favor of the inscription "In God We Trust" on US coins. Some 8% said they opposed it and 2% said they didn't know.

An ongoing Internet poll being conducted by CNBC produced these results as of September 2009, with more than 16 million people having responded:


Should the motto "In God We Trust" be removed from U.S. Currency?


Yes. It's a violation of the principle of separation of church and state. 12% 

No. The motto has historical and patriotic significance and does nothing to establish a state religion. 88%
